Limits & locks

Plans differ in how much a workspace can hold and in a few governance features. Nothing a tester does every day is locked on any plan. This page covers what happens at and over each limit, read-only projects, and which features each plan adds.

At and over a limit

At a limit the control that would go over it stays in place, disabled, with one sentence under it saying what is full, the free way out, and the plan that lifts the limit — plus Upgrade for a billing admin or Ask for everyone else. At 80% nothing interrupts the work; only the meters turn amber.

Test cases and AI generation

At the test-case limit New case is disabled and a note under the toolbar says so. AI generation checks what fits before anything is saved: when fewer drafts fit than came back, the review says so — “3 more cases fit on Free. Deselect 9, or move to Starter to save all 12.” — and Add waits until the selection fits. At the limit itself, generating is refused before any AI usage is counted.

Storage

At the storage limit the attachment drop zone reads Uploads are paused, with the reason and the way out, before you drag a file onto it.

Choosing active projects

The project limit counts active projects — open and not read-only. When a workspace has more open projects than its plan keeps active (after a downgrade, an ended subscription, or a payment problem that outlasts its grace period), the most recently updated ones stay active and the rest become read-only until a billing admin chooses. Choose projects — on the subscription page, in the projects list, or on a read-only project — opens a list of the open projects; pick exactly as many as the plan keeps and the rest are read-only. You can change the choice at any time.

Read-only keeps everything. A read-only project keeps every case, run, result and attachment, and anyone with access can still open it. It can’t take new runs, cases or edits until you upgrade or choose it as active. Marking it completed and deleting it still work.

Read-only projects

A read-only project says so in a strip across the top of every page in it, and its editing controls are switched off rather than failing when you use them:

  • Left out by the plan — “Read-only until it’s chosen as an active project, or the workspace upgrades.” Billing admins get Choose projects and Upgrade; everyone else gets Ask.
  • Completed — “Completed projects are read-only. Reopen to edit.” with Reopen for anyone who can edit projects. Reopening takes an active-project slot, so at the limit it is refused with the reason; complete another project or upgrade first.

Features by plan

Governance features are the only locks. Everything else — test cases, runs, cycles, explorations, tags, ready-made roles and statuses, templates, workflows, environments, every tracker integration, MCP, bulk edit, and AI generation within your allowance — is on every plan.

A locked page keeps its shape behind a veil and names the plan that adds it, with Upgrade to … for a billing admin and Ask for everyone else. A single locked action inside a page you can use — such as New role on Free — shows a lock and the plan name.
