Best test management tools for Linear (2026)
For Linear test management in 2026, five of the six tools we checked on 30 October have a Linear integration: Testmo, Testiny, TestLodge, Qase and TestOrchestrator. They differ in where issues can be linked, whether a failed result creates a Linear issue, whether issue status comes back, and whether test cases can be generated from a Linear issue.
01How we compared them
We read each vendor's own documentation and its listing in the Linear integrations directory on 30 October 2026. Five questions: can you link Linear issues to test cases, to runs or results, and to exploratory sessions; does a failed result create a Linear issue; does the issue status come back, or feed coverage and defect reports; can test cases be generated from a Linear issue; and does the tool publish an MCP server for AI agents. Not stated means we did not find it on the pages we read, not that it does not exist. We make TestOrchestrator and hold it to the same rule.
02Linear test management tools compared
Checked on 30 October 2026 against the vendor pages listed under the table.
| Tool | Linear issue links | Issue from a failed result | Status back, coverage and defect reports | Test cases from a Linear issue | MCP server |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Testmo | Test cases, test results, exploratory sessions and automation | Links to create new Linear issues during testing | Coverage and defect reports on linked issues | Not stated | Yes, in beta |
| Testiny | Test cases, test results and test runs, as requirements or defects | Yes, create a Linear issue from within Testiny | Issues shown in overviews and generated reports | Not stated | Yes, on paid and trial plans |
| TestLodge | Tests, by issue ID | Yes, created automatically when a test fails | Linear status synced back to show what is ready to re-test | Not stated | Not found on its site |
| Qase | Test cases and test runs | Yes, create or link from a failed case; shown under the run's defects | Defect status mapped to Linear | Not stated (its AI test designer docs name other sources) | Yes |
| TestRail | No Linear integration found | Not applicable | Not applicable | Not applicable | Yes, in beta |
| TestOrchestrator | Test cases, test runs and exploratory sessions, with live Linear search | Yes, from a run's Issues tab, linked to the failing cases as a defect | Issue status on the run; requirement links drive coverage; optional QA Agent posts results back | Yes, Generate tests in the Linear sidebar (AI feature) | Yes, every plan |

03What Linear test management needs
Linear is where engineering tracks the work; it does not keep test cases, runs or results. Linear test management is the pairing: a test management tool holds the tests and links each one to the Linear issue it covers or the bug it found. What matters is how deep that link goes:
- Coverage: which issues have tests, and which do not.
- Defects: a failed result becomes a Linear issue with the context a developer needs, without retyping it.
- Status: when the issue is fixed, the tester knows what to re-test.
- Authoring: test cases start from the issue, not from a blank page.
04Linear test case management in TestOrchestrator
A workspace admin connects Linear once with OAuth; there are no API tokens to paste. Then:
- Link a Linear issue to a test case, a test run or an exploratory session from the Link issue picker, which searches Linear live by key or title. On a case, the link type decides whether it counts as coverage (requirement) or a defect.
- Create a Linear issue from a run's Issues tab: Linear creates instantly, and you pick the failing cases to link as a defect.
- Read each issue's status on the run, with chips such as Re-test when the tracker says fixed but red cases remain.
- Generate draft test cases from a Linear issue with Generate tests in the issue's sidebar, and read an AI summary of any linked issue (AI features).
- Post results back with the optional QA Agent: off by default, on Pro or Business, it comments on linked issues after a run closes, and higher-risk changes wait for an admin's approval.
TestOrchestrator is listed in the Linear integrations directory. The Linear integration page and the Linear docs have the details, and generating test cases from a Linear issue walks through it.
05Linear test management software and AI agents
If your team works in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, an MCP server lets the agent do the linking for you: TestOrchestrator's link_to_issue, get_cases_for_issue and get_coverage_gaps tools let an agent link the cases it writes to their Linear issue and report which issues have no tests. See MCP server for test management.
